Long-lasting change

GVI’s goal is to create a global community of like-minded individuals committed to making a positive impact. We work in collaboration with local partner organisations in the countries we’re based in, for example, SASANE in Nepal. SASANE is a non-profit dedicated to empowering survivors of human trafficking through education and employment opportunities. Our mission is to create lasting change – with alumni, partners and staff continuing to make a positive impact long after the program ends.

Our high school group programs strike the perfect balance between adventure, learning and service – embracing the creative and service-oriented spirit of the Week Without Walls initiative. With programs in captivating destinations like Cambodia, Nepal, South Africa and Thailand, students are led by industry professionals and impact directors with PhD qualifications, ensuring a guided journey throughout. Engaging in ethically driven projects, students actively participate in initiatives that contribute to long-term change.

Week Without Walls options for high school students

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Cambodia is a fantastic destination for school trips abroad. Our community hub is right in the centre of Siem Reap, a city famous for its blend of architecture, lively markets, delicious street food and scenic riverside hangouts.

On our community development program students engage in sustainable long-term projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We focus on teaching, childcare, healthcare and initiatives that empower women – all in a sustainable way.

Along with visiting the temple of Angkor Wat, students can take part in a four-day trek through the jungles of the Cardamom Mountains and travel to the vibrant city of Phnom Penh.

Pokhara, Nepal

Our high school group program in Nepal offers an extraordinary opportunity. Imagine this: the breathtaking Annapurna mountain range right in front of you, adding an extra touch of nature’s wonder to the whole experience.

Situated in the city of Pokhara, students on our community development experience will work to improve the educational facilities at nearby schools. As well as temple visits, students will master the art of crafting traditional dumplings called “momos”, fully immersing themselves in Nepal’s flavours and cultural richness.

Afterward, students have the chance to journey to the Annapurna Sanctuary and conquer Poon Hill, famously known as the Annapurna sunrise trek. Along the route, they’ll stay at Nepali tea houses, creating lasting memories.

Cape Town, South Africa

In South Africa, we offer a group program tailored for students in the vibrant city of Cape Town. With its diverse mix of cultures, stunning scenery and iconic sites like Table Mountain, Cape Town creates the perfect backdrop for an absolutely unforgettable adventure.

During our community development experience students participate in programs with a focus on education and community development. Depending on the needs of our partners, activities could include support for sustainable sports programs and early childhood development initiatives.

As a part of the experience, students will learn about South Africa’s history. They’ll also have the opportunity to trek up Table Mountain, hop on a ferry to Robben Island and venture along the coastline, where they might spot African penguins.

Phang Nga, Thailand

Thailand is a highly sought-after destination for school trips abroad. Nestled in the beautiful Phang Nga province, our community hub is located in the beachside town of Ban Nam Khem.

Our community development program in Phang Nga lets students actively engage in local education initiatives, making a real impact. They also contribute to environmental conservation at a turtle centre, doing tasks like tank cleaning and data collection. These activities not only support the community but also contribute to our science database. It’s a hands-on way to learn about both education and conservation efforts.

Students will also have the opportunity to visit the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Museum and take in the beauty of Khao Sok National Park. Phang Nga offers an incredible blend of nature, adventures and impactful community involvement.

Conservation programs

Our school trips abroad also include programs that focus on wildlife and marine conservation in the following countries:

A lasting impact

At GVI, students get to be part of experiences that really make a difference. We’re all about creating a positive and lasting impact through our community programs. Our commitment is clearly reflected in our established permanent community hubs and dedicated staff across all our locations, consistently engaged in year-round projects alongside our partners. By prioritising sustainability and nurturing enduring connections, GVI remains steadfast in its mission to create a meaningful and lasting impact.

Skills for tomorrow’s world

GVI takes education beyond classrooms. Our focus? Nurturing vital skills needed for an ever-changing world. Our programs shape students into future leaders, building solid mental, emotional and social foundations. With PhD-holding impact directors and masterclasses led by industry experts, we nurture holistic growth. Our initiatives, aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, bring measurable, real-world change, backed by sources like Google Scholar.

An ethical approach

GVI operates under a strong ethical framework. Our impact directors oversee projects with integrity and deep regard for local communities. Through collaboration with local partner organisations on the ground, we achieve enduring, significant change. Our pre-departure support is comprehensive, led by experts boasting over 20 years of youth engagement experience. Transparent communication remains at the forefront of the journey.

Safety comes first

Health and safety is our top priority, which is why we insist on background checks for all of our participants and staff, as well as training in emergency first aid and in the implementation of our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy. We have also established extensive Emergency Action Plans, crisis management plans and situational risk assessments. These cater for all manner of events that might occur on base. Our expertise in managing young participants in international destinations has also secured us British Standards 8848 compliance.

We offer 24-hour support in-country, as well as a 24-hour emergency desk, which is also available to parents.

Supporting teachers every step of the way

Teachers play a vital role in our school trips abroad. To ensure a smooth journey, we keep a minimum ratio of one expedition leader per 12 participants, offering extra support and supervision. Your safety and success are our utmost priorities.

For our programs to flow smoothly, we offer three complimentary teacher spots for every twelve high school students who join us. We’ve got your pre-departure needs covered – from travel logistics to program expectations. Our dedicated teacher webinar lets you ask questions and share your thoughts with our support coordinators.

To support teachers and students preparing for their expedition, we have an online hub which provides essential information, resources, and opportunities for connection and progress tracking, all within a flexible time frame of 8–10 hours over five months.

Seamless transport and communication

GVI handles every transportation detail throughout the project, right up to the final airport drop-off, all guided by our seasoned expedition leaders. For seamless airport arrivals, we create instant messaging groups that keep students, teachers, parents and leaders in the loop. When they land, our uniformed GVI expedition leaders are right there at the airport to welcome the group and ensure their safe transfer to the chosen accommodation. After that, parents receive an email to confirm their child’s safe arrival.

Hear from students and educators

“We enjoyed and appreciated the generosity and professionalism in GVI staff from the early stage about communication to the farewell. Everything has been well coordinated and clearly communicated. We sure feel part of the family.”

– Dorothe, educator at Odsherreds Efterskole

“It was very educational and fun but also impactful.”

– Jessika, student at Odsherreds Efterskole

“I thoroughly recommend GVI to anyone; whether you are an educator looking to take a group away, or an individual looking for a career break or some volunteering experience, GVI will cater for you.”

– Matthew, educator at Newton International School

“Working in a large group of 16 people I learned leadership, patience, and how to contribute positively in a team, abilities that will all be useful in future employment. But aside from having a positive impact on my future employability, this program left a positive impact on the world around me.”

– Rhiannon, student at Duke University

“Having spent 10 years planning and leading school adventures for young people I have experienced first-hand the benefits and valuable life skills that group travel brings. I have confidence that by taking your students out of their comfort zone, by challenging them and allowing them to explore, meet people, work as a team and experience a different culture we can enhance their education and understanding. By enabling your students – our next generation – to see and experience the world for themselves we can help them become active global citizens. Our Mission is to increase cultural understanding and awareness of global issues within our alumni and to equip our alumni with the knowledge and ability to further contribute towards key global and local issues.”

– Tim, educator

“I can’t thank this organisation enough for helping me grow and giving me an incredible experience I won’t forget.”

– Abagail, student at Endicott College

“After eight weeks of participating in a wide variety of activities as a volunteer, I have learned the value of stepping outside my comfort zone and exploring areas besides animals and science. I used to think my science classes and animal-related extracurriculars at school were sufficient preparation for my future career. Now, I recognize the power of interdisciplinary studies in discerning the connections between seemingly unrelated topics, such as the use of microplastics and marine life conservation. A multidisciplinary approach like this is critical to problem solving in any profession. As such, the refined critical thinking skills and global awareness I acquired this summer will serve me well in the future. I am grateful to GVI for providing the education, resources, and support I needed to learn and grow over the past eight weeks.”

– Emma, student at Duke University

“The students who participated have been thrilled at the amazing results from their efforts!”

– Susan, educator

“I’ve learned more than I ever imagined I would. I most definitely would recommend GVI because the organisation of projects, accommodation and resources were exceptional.”

– Harshel, student at Duke University
