GVI’s mission in action

Our goal is to nurture a worldwide community of individuals driven by the desire to create meaningful positive change. To achieve this, we forge strong partnerships with local organisations, like SASANE in Nepal. SASANE is a non-profit dedicated to empowering survivors of human trafficking through education and employment opportunities. This collaboration, coupled with our passionate alumni, community partners and dedicated staff, propels lasting change long after the program concludes.

Join us for an unforgettable experience that combines cultural immersion with meaningful action. Our tailor-made group programs for high school students in countries like Cambodia, Nepal, South Africa and Thailand offer an opportunity for students to work in collaboration with local partners under the guidance of industry experts. Students actively engage in sustainable projects with a mission to create lasting positive change. GVI’s group programs blend adventure, learning and service, aligning seamlessly with the CAS curriculum’s emphasis on creativity, activity and service.

CAS options for high school students

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Cambodia is a fantastic destination for school trips abroad. You’ll find our community hub right in the centre of Siem Reap, a popular city known for its mix of architecture, markets, street food and riverside spots.

On our community development program students engage in sustainable long-term projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – with a focus on teaching, childcare, healthcare and women’s empowerment initiatives.

In addition to visiting the temple of Angkor Wat, students can take part in a four-day trek through the jungles of the Cardamom Mountains and travel to the dynamic city of Phnom Penh.

Pokhara, Nepal

Our high school group program in Nepal offers an extraordinary opportunity. Picture this: the incredible Annapurna mountain range right before your eyes, adding that extra dash of nature’s awe to the whole experience.

Situated in the city of Pokhara, students on our community development experience will work to improve the educational facilities at nearby schools. In addition to temple visits, students will learn how to make traditional dumplings known as “momos”, immersing themselves in the flavours and cultural traditions of Nepal.

Later, students can head to the Annapurna Sanctuary and ascend Poon Hill, also called the Annapurna Sunrise Trek. They’ll stay at Nepali tea houses along the trail for a memorable Himalayan adventure.

Cape Town, South Africa

In South Africa, we offer a group program tailored for students in the vibrant city of Cape Town. Known for its rich blend of cultures, breathtaking landscapes and iconic landmarks like Table Mountain, Cape Town sets the stage for an unforgettable experience.

During our community development experience students participate in programs aimed at enhancing education and community development. Depending on the needs of our partners, this might include support for sustainable sports programs and early childhood development initiatives.

As a part of the journey, students will learn about South Africa’s history. They’ll also get the chance to hike up Table Mountain, take a ferry ride to Robben Island and explore the coastline, where they can catch sight of African penguins.

Phang Nga, Thailand

Thailand is a highly sought-after destination for school trips abroad. Nestled in the beautiful Phang Nga province, our community hub is located in the beachside town of Ban Nam Khem.

Our community development program in Phang Nga lets students actively engage in local education initiatives, making a real impact. They also contribute to environmental conservation at a turtle centre, doing tasks like tank cleaning and data collection. These activities not only support the community but also contribute to our science database. It’s a hands-on way to learn about both education and conservation efforts.

Students will also have the opportunity to visit the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Museum and take in the beauty of Khao Sok National Park. Phang Nga offers a remarkable fusion of natural beauty, exciting experiences, and meaningful community contributions.

Conservation programs

Our school trips abroad also include programs that focus on wildlife and marine conservation in the following countries:

Dedicated to making a difference

At GVI, students get to be part of experiences that really make a difference. We’re all about creating a positive and lasting impact through our community programs. You can see how serious we are about this with our permanent community hubs and our staff present in all our spots, working on projects all year round with our partners. By putting the spotlight on sustainability and building strong, long-lasting relationships, GVI is committed to making a meaningful and lasting difference.

Real impact, real skills

At GVI, we go beyond traditional classroom education. We’re all about nurturing skills that truly matter in our dynamic world. Our programs are designed for personal evolution, shaping students into tomorrow’s leaders with a solid mental, emotional and social foundation. With impact directors holding PhD qualifications and masterclasses led by industry experts, we’re here to ensure holistic growth. Aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, our initiatives deliver tangible, measurable change, supported by scientific backing from sources like Google Scholar.

A collaborative approach

At GVI, ethics guide everything we do. Our impact directors ensure projects are carried out with integrity and respect for local communities. Partnering with local organisations taps into their expertise and community insight. Collaboration drives lasting, meaningful impact. We offer robust pre-departure support, led by experts with over 20 years of youth engagement experience, prioritising transparent communication throughout the journey.

Safety comes first

Health and safety is our top priority, which is why we insist on background checks for all of our participants and staff, as well as training in emergency first aid and in the implementation of our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy. We have also established extensive Emergency Action Plans, crisis management plans and situational risk assessments. These cater for all manner of events that might occur on base. Our expertise in managing young participants in international destinations has also secured us British Standards 8848 compliance.

We offer 24-hour support in-country, as well as a 24-hour emergency desk, which is also available to parents.

Supporting teachers every step of the way

Recognising the pivotal role teachers play in the success of our international school trips, we proactively establish an agreed-upon ratio of expedition leaders, teachers and students. This ensures an added layer of reassurance. Typically, we allocate at least one expedition leader per group of twelve participants.

In addition, we offer three complimentary teacher spots for every twelve high school students enrolled. Our pre-departure support covers travel logistics and program details. To facilitate communication, we host a teacher webinar for queries and feedback from educators, parents and chaperones.

To assist teachers and students in their expedition planning, we’ve created an online hub. This hub offers crucial information, resources, and a platform for interaction and tracking progress, all conveniently spread across a flexible span of 8–10 hours over five months.

Seamless travel management:

GVI expedition leaders take care of all transportation during the project, including the final airport drop-off. To streamline airport arrivals, we establish instant messaging groups connecting students, teachers, parents and expedition leaders. Upon arrival, uniformed GVI staff meet the group at the airport and oversee transportation to their accommodation. Following this, we send an email to parents, confirming their child’s safe arrival.

Hear from students and educators

“We enjoyed and appreciated the generosity and professionalism in GVI staff from the early stage about communication to the farewell. Everything has been well coordinated and clearly communicated. We sure feel part of the family.”

– Dorothe, educator at Odsherreds Efterskole

“It was very educational and fun but also impactful.”

– Jessika, student at Odsherreds Efterskole

“We had a great experience in Nepal this year. The work project was awesome! The focus on sustainability and purpose of development was great. The scope of the project and the physical nature of the construction was perfectly suited to the needs of our students. We’ve already been thinking about next year and would like to work with GVI again. It’s the best project I’ve seen in my 5 years!”

– Chris, educator at Stella’s School

“I’ve been able to form connections with local villagers and develop lasting relationships over these two months while teaching them skills, mainly English, that they will continue to use and develop after we’ve left. GVI has been integral to my experience here: providing strong leaders, an immersive program and the opportunity to make a difference.”

– Kevin, student at Duke University

“I thoroughly recommend GVI to anyone; whether you are an educator looking to take a group away, or an individual looking for a career break or some volunteering experience, GVI will cater for you.”

– Matthew, educator at Newton International School

“One of the most amazing parts was seeing the sense of community within the townships. It was humbling to hear the local people say it doesn’t matter your economic standings, but instead on your respect towards others. I feel as if I gained so much knowledge and was able to be immersed in a captivating culture. I hope to carry on all of the lessons I learned to my future career as a nurse, and my life in general.”

– Erin, student at Endicott college

“I have definitely developed new skills and I have learned a lot about myself and my personality. This trip was life changing for me and I would definitely go through this experience over again.”

– Amal, student at Wellspring Learning Community

“This trip has been a life-changing experience. In terms of my leadership session, I thought this was extremely helpful in developing my leadership skills. I would recommend GVI because I think they do a great job of focusing on work, but also remembering that understanding the culture is important.”

– Karen, student at Duke University

“The GVI team has done wonders for this lovely community! The students who participated have been thrilled at the amazing results from their efforts! We would love to come back and have already started a fundraiser campaign for two compost toilets!”

– Susan, educator

“I thought this experience was unforgettable! The amount of things that we saw and people we interacted with was unreal! I learned and improved my nursing skills by teaching the women and children in the township so much. I even learned a great deal about myself and who I want to be in life. GVI is a great organisation that gives back so much. You have to be a very special person to work for GVI. I can’t thank this organisation enough for helping me grow and giving me an incredible experience I won’t forget.”

– Abagail, student at Endicott college

“This trip has been enlightening, getting to know how the new environment around me works and getting to know the culture and religion was a way that helped me in understanding Nepal. This experience allowed me to challenge myself by going on a trek and face my fear of heights by crossing the bridge twice.”

– Elissa, student at Wellspring Learning Community

“Being in Nepal not only enriched my global perspective, it helped me appreciate home even more. If anyone is looking to make a difference while making life long (and life changing) memories, they should definitely sign up to come to Pokhara through GVI.”

– Genevieve, student

“Having spent 10 years planning and leading school adventures for young people I have experienced first-hand the benefits and valuable life skills that group travel brings. I have confidence that by taking your students out of their comfort zone, by challenging them and allowing them to explore, meet people, work as a team and experience a different culture we can enhance their education and understanding. By enabling your students – our next generation – to see and experience the world for themselves we can help them become active global citizens. Our mission is to increase cultural understanding and awareness of global issues within our alumni and to equip our alumni with the knowledge and ability to further contribute towards key global and local issues.”

– Tim, educator

“I’ve learned more than I ever imagined I would. I most definitely would recommend GVI because the organisation of projects, accommodation and resources were exceptional.”

– Harshel, student at Duke University
